Destination Thailand Visa (DTV): New Rules From 31 August 2026

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is a five-year, multiple-entry visa for remote workers, freelancers and participants in listed Thai activities, and applicants submit it through the Thailand e-Visa system. For applications submitted on or after 31 August 2026, applicants must provide proof of permanent residence and a certificate of criminal record clearance. This guide sets out what the Thai embassy notices state, where they stop short, and which points each mission confirms.

Status note, 4 October 2026. The requirements below are in force for applications submitted on or after 31 August 2026, according to a Royal Thai Embassy notice dated 2 September 2026. Each Thai mission publishes its own checklist. This article is general information, not legal advice. Please confirm the current requirements with the mission that will receive the application.

What is the Destination Thailand Visa?

The Destination Thailand Visa carries five years of validity and allows multiple entries. Also, Thai embassy pages state a permitted stay of up to 180 days per entry. The visa launched on 15 July 2024, and applications go through the Thailand e-Visa system rather than through a paper process.

Thai embassy pages describe two purposes. The first is a workcation, which covers digital nomads, remote workers, foreign professionals and freelancers. The second is participation in Thai soft power activities, such as Muay Thai, culinary courses and medical treatment. In addition, a spouse and children under 20 may apply as dependents.

Who can apply for the Destination Thailand Visa?

An applicant needs a qualifying purpose and financial evidence of not less than THB 500,000, according to a Royal Thai Embassy page. Specifically, the evidence takes the form of bank statements or a sponsor letter. Purpose documents differ by category, and each mission lists its own checklist.

Item What the embassy pages list
Workcation Employment contract, employer certification or portfolio. The pages reviewed describe a foreign employer or client.
Soft power activity An invitation or enrolment document from the activity provider.
Dependents Documents proving the family tie to the principal applicant.
Financial evidence Not less than THB 500,000, shown by bank statements or a sponsor letter.
Submission Thailand e-Visa system.

What changed on 31 August 2026?

Two document requirements changed for applications submitted on or after 31 August 2026. First, proof of permanent residence now replaces the document that indicated the applicant’s current location. Second, a certificate of criminal record clearance is newly required. However, applications submitted before that date continue under the previous requirements.

For example, the Royal Thai Embassy in Moscow dated its notice 2 September 2026 and gave an effective time of 00:00 on 31 August 2026, Thailand time. The Thaiger reported that the Department of Consular Affairs issued the announcement on 28 August 2026. Meanwhile, the Royal Thai Embassy page in Savannakhet states that applicants must be permanent residents of the country where they submit the application.

Key takeawayThe cut-off is the date of submission, not the date the visa issues. In addition, the test moves from the place where the applicant is now to the place where the applicant is settled.

How do embassies apply the permanent residence requirement?

The Moscow notice does not define which documents prove permanent residence, and it does not name the authorities that issue criminal record certificates. As a result, missions have published differing checklists. Therefore, an applicant should read the checklist of the mission that will receive the application.

The Thaiger reported the following differences in September 2026. We have not verified each mission page against that report, so the mission’s own page remains the primary source.

Mission Position as reported
Vientiane Nationality or permanent residency only.
Ho Chi Minh City Temporary residence cards accepted.
Los Angeles Valid visas accepted, including US visas with six or more months remaining.
Moscow English and Russian pages give conflicting guidance on valid visas and permanent status.

Source conflict left open. Because of this, the reported positions above differ from one another, and the central announcement does not resolve them. Please confirm the accepted documents with the receiving mission before submitting.

What stay does the Destination Thailand Visa allow?

The visa remains valid for five years with multiple entries, and Thai embassy pages state a stay of up to 180 days per entry. Two published guides also describe one 180-day extension per entry, followed by an exit and re-entry. Confirm the extension terms with the Immigration Bureau before travelling.

For other long-stay routes, see our guides to the Long-Term Resident visa and the Thailand visa exemption rules.

Can a DTV holder work in Thailand?

The embassy checklists reviewed describe remote work for a foreign employer or a foreign client. However, the pages do not state whether a holder may work for a Thai employer or Thai client. They also do not state whether the visa supports a Thai work permit.

Therefore, anyone planning work inside Thailand should confirm both points with the mission and the Immigration Bureau. Our guide to the work permit in Thailand sets out the separate permit framework.

What should an applicant confirm before submitting?

Four points decide whether an application meets the checklist that applies on the submission date.

  1. Confirm the date of submission against the 31 August 2026 cut-off.
  2. Confirm which documents the receiving mission accepts as proof of permanent residence.
  3. Confirm which authority issues the criminal record certificate for that mission, and any age limit the mission sets.
  4. Confirm the category documents and the THB 500,000 financial evidence on the mission’s own checklist, through the Thailand e-Visa system and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.
